THE COURT OF APPEAL MAY HAD OVERTURNED THE DEATH SENTENCE OF NEMAT SAFAVI. NEW TURN IN NEMAT SAFAVI'S CASE
This afternoon (Sunday, November 22) and in the absence of confirmation (and with all reservations) we have learned that the Court of Appeal, where the dossier of Nemat Safavi had been forwarded, may had overturned the death sentence of Nemat Safavi. (Remember that today has been working day in Iran.) The original message is the following: "Court of Appeals has overturned the death sentence of Nemat Safavi in Ardebil”. The information comes from sources in Tehran calling persianbanoo a pseudo which Iis used by an opposition journalist network using Twitter to deliver news of Iran abroad. According to LGBT activists in Britain to whom we have consulted this afternoon, they deserve credibility to this source. At the moment we have asked confirmation of this point to Iranian networks in exile, Iranian LGBT activists, iranian embassy in Spain and to Correspondents of EFE in this country and we are still expecting news from any of them. Apparently, and according to Human Rights Activists and other Persian opposition website (same information is repeated here), this new is relating a record of 4 March 2009 (14 ESfhan 87), where it was stated that the Court of Appeal should review the case of Nemat Safavi.
This seems to confirm the possibility that the hearing has been concluded today, according to information provided by the tweet of Persianbanoo. We believe that the fact that the Court of Appeal has ruled this, does not mean that the process is concluded and even the Supreme Court may still resolve. It could also be, as in the infamous case of Makwan Moloudzadeh, some sort of appeal to the matter that might reactivate the death sentence. Finally, we should not forget that Nemat still in prison and that their ultimate fate depends on many factors. In Iran everything is possible. As you can see all caution is necessary, however, Nemat's case today takes a new direction. Now the important thing is not whether he exists or not, where he might be and how, but rather how's the case going and to act urgently to claim his liberation. |
